W995 - Walkman and more!
At this year's World Mobile Congress, Sony Ericsson has introduced its new Walkman phone flagship. The slider popped up in the net under its internal code name 'Hikaru' pretty early already. The 'brand hero' comes with a pretty impressive feature set:
- 8.1MP camera with Autofocus, Face Recognition, SmileShutter™
- 2.6 inch Display
- 3.5mm Standard headset connector
- aGPS
- WLAN
- UMTS
- Netfront™ Browser
- Dedicated keys for music player
- 2 Stereo Loudspeakers
- Kickstand on the back
The feature set pretty much fulfills every wish: the display with its resolution of 320x240 pixels and 2.6 inches in diameter is bigger than the one of e.g. the W705. And yet, the device has not become much bigger in size than its predecessors.
The device runs the well-known A200 platform (the original plan of Sony Ericsson to introduce the A300 platform with the W995 has obviously been cancelled)
The casing of the new Walkman flagship is almost all made of aluminum with a brushed look. This leaves the handset with a very nice haptics. The dedicated music player keys on the side of the device offer a comfrotable possibility to change the loudness and start/stop/skip titles without the need to open the walkman player in the device. The way those keys are placed resemble a little bit to the first generation walkman players which were operated with cassettes.
The modern cassettes are the M2 Memorysticks, Sony Ericsson provides a 8GB sized one with each W995.
