Have you ever been in a foreign city, looking for a specific kind of restaurant, place, business etc.? Here is where the Places Directory app comes in handy - we gave it a try on the Xperia X10, read on to find out more.

 

After a couple of freezing hours walking around in NY, it was time for some dinner action - friends suggested a sushi place called 'Tsushima'. I specifically did not ask for any directions, since I wanted to try Google's Places application. Whatever place you are looking for, just type it in and you get more or less detailed information about that place. This not only includes address or phone number details, but also user reviews, a map, the distance and direction from your current location and a picture gallery. Enough details in order to provide a pretty comprehensive overview, without even having seen the place before.

 

There are currently 12 categories of places:

• Attractions
• Banks
• Bars
• Coffee
• Gas Stations
• Hotels
• Medical
• Movie Theatres
• Parking
• Restaurants
• Shopping
• Taxis

Of course it is also possible to search for places, as well as pick them from the map. In case you are out of walking distance, there is also the possibility to have the route calculated, set the place as a destination for the new Turn-by-Turn navigation (which we covered here btw) and switch to Street View - should you have troubles to find the entrance, for example ;)
