LiveView hands-on video & live pictures
As promised earlier on, we managed to get our hands on one of those tiny LiveView devices. Read on to see it in action in our hands-on video, and get some detailed impressions on the mini display in our live picture gallery.
So you probably already got the new about Sony Ericsson latest gadget, the mini display they call "LiveView". It connects via Bluetooth to any Android 2.1+ phone, and it is able to show SMS, RSS feeds, Incoming Calls, Facebook and Twitter feeds as well as calendar events out of the box. We will show you all of these standard notifications in just a minute. But first let's have a look at the App that controls all of these functions:As you can see, the app lets you select which kind of notifications you would like to see on your LiveView. For Twitter and Facebook, there are further settings available which allow you to choose for which Facebook friends / Twitter followers you want to receive notifications on the mini display - what a blessed idea! :)
Any number and kind of RSS feeds can be added. For all online services, an update intervall can be defined. Last but not least, the LiveView display can be reset to clear all unread notifications.
Probably the most interesting feature of the remote display is the ability for developers to send content for their very own applications to the device. Sony Ericsson will provide a framework to the developer world, and we are very curious to see what creative notification ideas they come up with. The so called 3rd party plugins are managed via the LiveView app as well.
As you can see in below video, the LiveView device can launch corresponding apps on the phone for certain content:
- RSS entry: opens the selected RSS link in the browser
- SMS entry: opens the selected text message on the phone
- Twitter entry: opens twitter in the browser
- Facebook entry: opens the selected item in Facebook (browser)
- Calendar entry: opens the corresponding entry in the phone's calendar
- Incoming calls: opens the call log on the phone
For every new event, the mini display vibrates (which can be turned off in the settings), and the LED in the upper left button flashes in different colors, depending on the type of event.
Another out-of-the-box feature: LiveView serves also as a remote control for the mobile phone's music player. Play, Pause, volume up/down and fast forward are the available controls, the mini display also shows the artist and the name of the song that is currently being played. And in case you were wondering if the LiveView can be used in combination with an AD2P headset, the answer is: yes! Which makes this a pretty neat combo for the wireless music lover :)
Alright, let's move over to our hands-on video where we take a close look at all the above mentioned features. Enjoy!
Finally, we shot a couple of close up pictures and put them together for your viewing pleasure :)
