We used a trip to the water for a quick test of Sony Ericsson's just announced outdoor mobile phone, the Xperia active - how is it doing under water? :)

Especially Ericsson had a history of outdoor mobile phones. The joint venture continued this just recently by announcing the Xperia active outdoor handy. It is protected against dust and water, and it can be handled with wet fingers - not a too unrealistic use case if you are going for a rainy bike tour, for example.

Sony Ericsson claims that the phone can handle 30 minutes under water (up to 1m) without any damage. We didn't quite go that far, but as you can see in our video, the Xperia active handles this task without any problem. The split screen in the video shows the outside view, as well as the Xperia active recording the whole procedure.

After the little dive session, the phone had water in the first layer of the protective shelf, but the second one kept its insides nice and dry. Also the connectors on the buttom stayed dry, thanks to their sealed covers.

So we guess it is safe to say that if you are into outdoor sports and want to stay mobile and connected under any weather condition - go for the Android powered Xperia active!
